One of the major things while planning the layout and decor of your house is the lighting. You would like to have the best value for money without compromising on the smartness of your home. There is a large variety available in the market, from the high end exclusive chandeliers to the reasonable costing bed lamps that are essential for your night time reading.
So what are the things to be kept in mind while making up your mind?
Living room: The first thing to see is the size of your living room. Is it large sized and has vast open spaces, or does it have just about adequate space to place your leather recliners with little to spare? In the former case, you should best go for soft lighting to enhance the areas you want to accentuate.
Have a special painting you spent a fortune on? You would be absolutely right in placing it where it draws the maximum attention, enhanced greatly by a focus light. The focus light should be smart and should compliment the painting. Numerous varieties of chic focus lights that don’t cost the earth are available at any electric store.
Keep the rest of the lighting around it comparatively dim, so as not to take away from its sheen. While you are at it, pop into any furniture store to get some good ideas – see the way they display their wares.
In case of smaller rooms, bright lighting is what will make your room look larger than it is. A light focused on the ceiling would give it a higher and larger look. You could place a floor lamp in the corner to utilize the space. Combine the lamp with a corner stand to showcase some of the collection you made during your last holiday to the beach – just make sure you limit your display to reasonable sized pieces that do not look outlandish in the small space reserved for them.
Bedroom: The bedroom deserves special attention as it is the place where you spend your private time. You may not be showcasing it to the rest of the world, but the lighting has to be elegant and functional. It should fit in well with your needs of reading, studying, dressing etc, and at the same time be aesthetically appealing.
The lighting needs to complement your bedroom furniture. Keep a night lamp on the bedside tables for night time reading. Have a focus light just above your dressing mirror, to light up your face well while dressing.
Fluorescent lights are great in terms of whiteness of the light and energy efficiency, thus keeping your subsequent electricity bills low as well. Use tube-lights and CFLs to do the job for you.
The Attic: The attic is the place that has a variety of uses. It can be used purely as a store, or can be converted to a children study, or the art studio you always wanted to explore your talent with. In either case, there would be specific lighting requirements for each. You may choose bright colored lamp shades in case of a children room. Keep a switch close to the door for the children to use the lights without much discomfort.
Your requirements for a hobby room would be more simple, but functional, and would take exact requirement in being a room meant for a specific hobby – be it painting, or carpentry. The lighting should facilitate the functional requirements, and must complement your furniture.
